Q: I've had a lasik surgury in both eyes some 10 plus years back in Phoenix, Az. I have been pretty satisfied with it so far until something odd happened recently. This is a rather unique question that I want to ask - it just happened with a month that my vision started to really go down, things just got really blurry to the point that I couldn't even watch a game in a gym. I forgot to take out a tampon after having my monthly period and I went to a doctor to have it removed but for some crazy reason they didn't detect it. This was done with a doctor other than the one I usually see. My regular doctor said that it was possible that it could have been somewhere else behind a flap in my uterus/vagina. After one month of living with this embarrassment it was finally taken out after I tried to take it out myself, which by that time the tampon had gotton pretty bit. As soon as the tampon was taken out at an emergency room, the next day my vision alot better - I could actually see people's face in the gym again. All this problem happended with in a months period. Today my eyes still aren't back to its normal focus but they are still blurry and dry. My whole body seemed to be completely dried out during that time and up to now, my vision seems to be coming back bit by bit and I'm hoping it all comes back. My doctor doesn't believe the whole ordeal and thinks it something else but personally I think it had a lot to do with the tampon that completely dried me out, along with my eyes especially. I'm just waiting a bit longer and I'm going in to see an eye doctor. I'm not sure who to see - a regular eye doctor or a lasik doctor. What do you think about this crazy incident? Give me some input. Thank you.

A: I am happy that things are better. You can see any ophthalmologist.

Q: I have recently had Lasik surgery and am having complications with worsening eye twitches (worse on one eye). Have you had any other complaints like this? Is there anything I can do? Thanks so much. Nancy Ralston

A: I would talk to your doctor about this.

Q: I had lasik surgery two weeks ago and have had insomnia ever since. Can the laser affect the thalamus, and hypothalamus part of the brain which are responsible for the function of sleep and are behind the eye?

A: Probably not.

Q: I underwent the Custom Lasik on both eyes (-5.25, -6.25) on December 2nd. My optometrist, at my one week follow up check up tells me that I developed, or the surgery amplified an astigmatism in my left eye (previously not present) and that I am still -1.0 in my right eye. My vision is blurry in both and it still feels like it is fluctuating. I deffinately cannot see road signs until too late while driving. My optometrists says I qualify for a touch up. I am scared. What is the possibility of further complications? How often does this happen? I get regular pains behind my eyes, I think because I am not used to the poor vision. While watching TV, unless 4 feet away, I can hardly recognize the actors. Help! What can you tell me from this limited information?

A: You should have been told from the start that many patients require enhancement surgeries. It is not uncommon.

Q: Do you recommend wearing glasses prior to having lasik done? I have scheduled to have lasik done within a week and the doctor didn't tell me to wear glasses. I found out through friends who've had lasik, that their doctors told them to wear glasses 3 weeks prior to the surgery.

A: Maybe you should find another doctor.

Q: Hello,
I've had made an Lasik 5 weeks ago, on the two eyes. Initialy I have 1.75 dioptries on both. Now I have 0.5 on the left eye and 0.75 on the right. My problem is that I have double vision on my right eyr for three/four weeks ago. My doctor said that he don't know this symptom. What can be done to resolve an eye treated whit lasik, and since than appeared that double vision? Make another Lasik on that eye?

A: You may have astigmatism. If your doctor seems confused, then get another opinion.

Q: Dear Dr. Caster,

I am myopia/astigmatic (OD -6.00 -0.50/OS -5.50 -0.5) and my cornea thickness is right->498um/left->489um. Can LASIK give me 20/20 vision and still leave enough cornea thickness if I need an enhancement ? Or, should I pursue other refractive surgery ?

Regards,

Kevin

A: Depoending on several additional factors, you may be able to have lasik, or PRK may be your best option.

Q: I had lasik in August - prior to lasik my vision was about -6.50 both eyes; after lasik until apx 1 month ago, my vision was great, now my near vision is great, but I have lost distance such that I must squint to see anything with distinction about 15-30 feet away. Should I have an enhancement?

A: Maybe. You should see your doctor for an evaluation.

Q: I had Lasik surgery in June 2002 and still experience significant "starbursts" from light at night. My vision is about 20/25 and my cornea is relatively thin (480 after lasik).

Can any of the new procedures (such as CustomVue Wavefront) be used to eliminate the starbursting for my situation?

A: Yes. You should obtain another evaluation.

Q: I know it says that you must remove your soft contact lenses upto 4 days prior to measurements. Is that for Custom Lasik or Standard Lasik? Also, what if you were to pop in your contacts for periodic time frames during that 4 day window. What would be the ramifications?

A: The exact amount of time that you should be out of your contacts is not clear. Some doctors say 7 or even 14 days. The ocntacts can affect the measurements.

Q: Hello! I'm 34 years old and had LASIK in 1999, but my vision seems to be getting bad again. I'm wondering if any of the laser eye surgeries are appropriate for someone who's already had LASIK? Thanks!

A: Yes, Lasik can be done again.

Q: I have gotten a free LASIK evaluation before and was told that I was not a good candidate because my maximum correctable vision was 20/40 and that with LASIK, that can sometimes get worse. Do you feel that LASIK is an option for me? If not, what is the possibility of a lens transplant? I think that is a possible solution, which would correct where the visual image is focused. Thank you for your reply.

A: I would need to see your exact situation in more detail, but in general we recommend against any elective surgery in people who can obtain only 20/40 vision even with glasses.

Q: If I have LASIK or LASEK surgery performed and my eyesight becomes worse years later, will I still be able to wear contacts after the surgery or would I have to have another surgical procedure performed to correct my vision. Currently I wear -8 lenses and also need +2 for reading, if this makes a difference. Thanks.

A: Almost all of the time, if your eyes change in the future and you need visual correction, then you can wear contacts if you choose.
