email questions about vision correction and Lasik surgery
Q:
I had a failed attempt at monovision and a re-surgery to eliminate it. After being told what a great result I had, I found out I was really nearsighted in one eye and far sighted in the other with lasik induced astigmatisms in both eyes. After months of dizziness, nausea and headaches and disability, I went to an OEP optometrist who says my corneas are as wavy as funhouse mirrors. RGP's may be my only hope of functioning normally. Why did this happen and what would you call it?
A:
I would recommend getting another opinion, just to be sure about the outcome. Further surgery may be possible.

Q:
My daughter had custom lasiks a couple months ago. She is suffering from dry eyes now and her vision is good some days and some days its not. The doctor that done it says it could take up to a year for the eyes to heal and stabilize. Is this correct? He told her to keep pouring eye drops in the eyes to keep them moist. I'm very concerned. She was legally blind without her contacts before she had this done. Her eyes get real bloodshot and I worry as a mother that her eyes have been ruined. Can you give me any input? Thanks,
S. Jones
A:
There are several treatments that are available for dry eyes, including flaxssed oil pills, night ointments, and tear duct plugs. She should discuss these with her doctor or see another doctor.

Q:
I'm facing cataract surgery and have been asked to decide whether the affected eye should be made nearsighted or farsighted. Can lasik or PRK be performed after the IOL implant to correct the eye perfectly? If so, which option is best?
A:
Yes, Lasik can be performed after cataract surgery, if needed. Whether to have the eye adjusted for near or far is a personal matter that requires significant discussion with your doctor.

Q:
Dear doctor, I am asking for an advice about the best eye treatment that is currently available. I am a hemophiliac however I want to get rid of my glasses as to have a more convenient life. I have a degree of -6.5 and astigmatism of around 3.Since I am a hemophiliac deficiencies in factor ( 8) I am confused to take what treatment that is the best and most suitable for my condition. What bothers me is that I am afraid that it may risk my eye-sight if I undergo LASIK treatment due to bleeding. I am entrusting on the expertise of the doctor to give me good advice upon which treatment that I should take if I want to have good eye-sight. Since there are many treatments that can be chosen such as LASIK, LASEK, CUSTOMVUE,CUSTOM LASIK and LASIK with intraLASE.
A:
I would recommend Lasek, with or without the Custom software, to lessen your chance of unwanted bleeding.

Q:
Which of the eye surgeries does not require a removal of the flap?
A:
Lasik without a flap goes by many different names -- PRK, Lasek, Epi-Lasek. All of these are variations of the same procedure. Also, a lens can be implanted inside the eye in a procedure called phakic intraocular lens placement.

Q:
hi, i am currently 18 years of age and am interested in getting laser eye surgery because i demise glasses which i am forced to wear at work. my question is how safe is it to get laser eye surgery if my eyes are not exactly stable? I think in the last year and a half my eyes worsened by .25... both my eyes are the same 3.00 and 3.00. They use to get worse by .25 every year but are slowing down now.. my other question is what is the recovery time because i actually work at syncrude canada (big oil production plant in canada) (plus I am a dilivery driver, not welder or electrician or anything), but the thing is that the air is quite dirty there.. if I wear safetly glasses constantly how long would it take for my eyes to become safe again (without safety glasses)?
thanks; Cody
A:
Laser eye surgery will not stop your eyes from changing. If they are changing, you may need an enhancement at some time in the future.
Most people return to work the next day. You might want to take a couple of days off.

Q:
If you saw 20/200 in one eye and 20/70 in the other would you see about 20/60 with both eyes? Do you usually see better using both eyes?
A:
You usually see a little better with both eyes than with each eye separately.

Q:
Is 11 days enough time to go without wearing my soft contacts - they are not extended wear, before the actual lasik surgery? The doctor told me 11 days is enough.
A:
Usually that is enough. In rare cases longer may be necessary.

Q:
Is it possible to have Lasik performed 3 times if your cornea is thick enough. 525 microns script is OD -.50 - .50x OS -.75 x .25, Last procedure was done 6 months ago.
A:
There is no problem with having these repeat Lasik treatments, in the rare event that they are needed, if the cornea is thick enough. Of course, there is the small risk of infection, or folds in the flap, every time that you lift it.

Q:
I have rumathoid arthritis and my arthritis specialist (doctor) said that it is affecting my eyes.....My eyes get red, pain ,pinch, and it has affected the vision in one eye. My eye doctor said after a 1 hour exam, several tests and interview that I have no disease,no illness,no reason he can relate to my problem.. Can a Lasik surgeon HELP ME !!! PLEASE ADVISE
A:
Rheumatoid arthritis patients will often have problems with the eyes. They should avoid Lasik unless their condition is very mild and very much under control.
